German Shepherd Dog

The German Shepherd Dog is the most popular and well-known breed in the world, with its breed club in Germany being the biggest breed club in the world. The breed itself, however, is a relatively recent one, developed by von Stephanitz in the late 1800s, who also founded the breed club. Developed from herding and farm dogs, it is considered the world's best working dog, and the variety of work for which it is suited indicates the breed's intelligence, trainability, loyalty and courage. There are two types of German Shepherd Dog, a working type and a show type, with the show type being slightly more exaggerated in its characteristics. The German Shepherd Dog is widely known for its police and army work, but also for its work as guide dog to the blind.
