Yorkshire Terrier Breed Profile

A breed originally brought to Yorkshire by Scottish weavers, who used its luxurious, soft hair in their products, the Yorkshire Terrier became a prized pet in the late Victorian Era and forgot all about its workmanlike past. In 1861, the Yorkie made its first appearance at a bench show in England, but was then called a "Broken Haired Scotch Terrier." The breed didn't become known as a Yorkshire Terrier until 1870. The characteristics of the modern-day Yorkie are well established: they have distinctive coloring, metallic in nature, ranging from dark steel-blue from the occiput to the root of the tail, rich golden tan on head, legs, chest and breeches. Another breed that, though tiny, displays its Terrier nature, the Yorkie is a playful, sometimes rowdy companion, and great fun to be around,.

Yorkshire Terrier Distinguishing Characteristics

Shorter and slightly higher on his legs than the Silky Terrier. More refined in their conformation than the Silky Terrier.
