English Toy Spaniel Breed Profile
Though the origins of Toy Spaniels in general remain a matter of conjecture, there is a story that the English Toy Spaniel was actually brought from Japan to England in 1613 by a naval officer named Captain Saris, as gifts from the Emperor of Japan to King James I. Or perhaps Mary, Queen of Scots, brought specimens of the English Toy Spaniel back with her from France in the 1500s. Whatever the truth of the English Toy Spaniel's origin, it remains a bright, affectionate, devoted little dog eager to please its human masters, whose beautiful head, with its short nose and dark, lustrous eyes, and domed head, speak of its merry demeanor and define its beauty.
English Toy Spaniel Distinguishing Characteristics
At one time, this breed was classified as being part of a single breed with the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. The English Toy resembles the Cavalier King Charles, with a short nose. Sometimes they also have a short tail. The overall appearance is slightly more cobby than the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
