Belgian Sheepdog Breed Profile

The Belgian Sheepdog's origins may be traced to the late 1800s, and, though originally a shepherd, its intelligence and trainability made it possible for it to work at many different jobs, much like the Belgian Malinois. Belgian Customs officers used the dogs in border patrols, and during World War I, the Belgian Sheepdogs served as message carriers, ambulance dogs, and pulled machine guns. Called the Groenendael in Belgian, only a Belgian Sheepdog with three generations of registered Groenendael ancestors may be registered with the AKC. They are particularly loyal and devoted pets and wonderful guard dogs, without the extreme need for an occupation that the Malinois exhibits.

Belgian Sheepdog Distinguishing Characteristics

Longhaired version of the Malinois in black. The forehand angulation should be closer to a 110-115 degree angle than to the 90 degree angle considered to be a normal forehand
