Beauceron Breed Profile

A French herding breed, the Beauceron was developed solely in France, dating back to at least 1578. This short-coated dog is well-balanced and solid, with good height and muscle, though without heaviness or coarseness. The Beauceron is an intelligent, alert, energetic and hard-working dog with elegant carriage, while the conformation indicates depth and solidity without bulkiness, but with strength, endurance and agility. These are large-framed dogs with good bone. The breed has a dense undercoat and a short, coarse outer coat, and is generally black and tan with red feet. A very trainable breed, with all the instincts necessary to be a good guard dog, the Beauceron is reserved with strangers and has a degree of independence. But he is devoted to those he knows, and will guard his home and family; he is known to have an excellent memory.
