Canine Breed Profile

American English Coonhound Breed Profile

The multi-national name of the American English Coonhound reflects the breed's development. Originally used for fox hunting in Great Britain, the progenitors of this breed, when brought to the colonies of America, specifically Virginia, were selectively bred to adapt to rougher terrain and the need to hunt foxes by day and raccoons by night. This athletic dog must have speed, strength, agility and endurance, and its look reflects these qualities, as it is a handsome, leggy breed, both elegant and strong. The easy going personality of this breed, however, is coupled with a need for regular exercise, as this breed has a lot of energy. The American English Coonhound has a short coat which requires much less upkeep than its intelligence and energy level demand. This is a highly competitive, super-charged dog that is both fast and tenacious on the hunt.
