American Water Spaniel Breed Profile

The American Water Spaniel is, clearly, an American hunting breed, though it was developed from the extinct English Water Spaniel, Irish Water Spaniel, and Flatcoated Retriever. This breed is a gifted all-around hunting dog, excellent gun dog and retriever, that swims beautifully using its tail as a rudder, with an excellent nose and athletic ability to work the most difficult terrain, as well as an ability to retrieve from skiffs or canoes. The American Water Spaniel is always willing, and retrieves rabbits, chickens, grouse, quail, pheasant or ducks with equal ease and care. Possessed of a kind and sensitive character, this breed is intelligent and eager to please. Prior to AKC recognition in 1940, enthusiasts of this breed had worked to keep the breed out of the AKC, as they feared that turning this excellent hunting dog into a show dog would dilute his native qualities.

American Water Spaniel Distinguishing Characteristics

Normal looking gun dog with a very soft, sometimes sad looking expression. The curly coat is shorter than the Irish Water Spaniel. The American Water Spaniel is also smaller than the Irish Water Spaniel.
