Akita Breed Profile

A massive, handsome dog, bred originally in 17th century Japan to hunt bear, deer and wild boar, the Akita is a fearless and mythically loyal breed that is also a powerful working dog, guard dog, and devoted companion. Stories of the breed's legendary bravery and fidelity abound in Japan. Helen Keller brought the first Akitas into the United States, having been made a gift of an Akita puppy while visiting the region in Japan for which the dog is named in 1937. Following World War II, many American servicemen brought Akitas home from the Pacific Theater with them, so impressed were they with the dog's intelligence, working ability and devotion. The Akita is a large-boned dog with a broad head, erect ears, and a curled tail; its coat is Nordic. This is both a wonderful family dog, and a dog to be reckoned with.

Akita Distinguishing Characteristics
